The Anders Svor Museum was opened in Hornindal in 1953. 450 of Svor`s work, the major part of his production, are collected here.

Characteristic for Anders Svor's art is its simplicity, purity and authenticity. His works are naturalistic in form, often with a touch of romanticism about them. Excellent visiting exhibitions are also staged in the gallery.

Anders Svor was born in 1864 on the Svor farm in Hornindal. While still a boy he showed a remarkable talent for wood carving and at the age 17 travelled to Christiania (Oslo) where he worked as a wood carver in a piano factory. At the age of 21 he left for Denmark and became a student at the Copenhagen Academy of Art. His breakthrough as a sculptor came at the Berlin international art exhibition in 1891 where he won a gold medal. He later participated in many art exhibitions ub Christiania, also in Paris, Copenhagen and Chicago. In 1891 he also won a competition for a monument in the Norwegian capital to the naval hero, Tordenskiold. A commission to erect the statue, however, was not granted; a hard blow for the young artist. Anders Svor lived for a while in Paris, but finally established himself in Christiania, where he had his studio. He lived alone and died in 1929. He lies buried in the churchyard in Hornindal.
